Signs your home needs an electrical panel upgrade
Your electrical panel doesn’t get much attention until something goes wrong. Here are the signs we look for when homeowners in Lancaster County ask whether it’s time for an upgrade.
Breakers trip regularly
An occasional trip is normal. A breaker that trips again and again can mean an overloaded circuit, a failing breaker, or a panel that can’t keep up with what the house demands.
Lights flicker or dim when appliances start
Dimming when the dryer, air conditioner, or oven kicks on can point to an overloaded service or a loose connection. It’s worth having an electrician check it.
You still have a fuse box
Fuse boxes aren’t automatically dangerous, but they’re often too small for modern homes, and some insurers ask about them. If yours has been tampered with or fused too high, it’s a bigger concern.
You’re adding something big
An EV charger, heat pump, hot tub, addition, or kitchen remodel can push an older panel past its limit. We check capacity before any of these projects. See our EV charger installation page for more.
Your panel is an older brand with a known history
Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels have well-documented problems. If you have one, have it evaluated by an electrician.
The panel looks, sounds, or feels wrong
Rust, scorch marks, buzzing, or a panel that’s warm to the touch all deserve prompt attention. If you smell burning or see smoke, get everyone out and call 911.
